By 2050, 70 percent of the world’s population will live in major cities.
As demands on resources and infrastructure grow, how will cities provide energy, water, transportation and other services?
The internet of things (IoT) is making it possible to make cities greener, safer and more efficient.
In smart cities, many players must work together to provide solutions. Vehicles, infrastructure and devices from pumps to parking meters need to be connected together so that benefits can arise from the whole interconnected system.
But what can connect every device, no matter where it is?
With its proven reliability, simple deployment and ubiquitous reach, GSM cellular communication is an ideal technology to connect IoT applications across a smart city.
Another method is Low Power Wide Area Networks: these are cheaper to build and run than GSM, so in many cases are a good choice. They have lower power requirements, and can have a reach of up to 5 kilometres.
But they don't have the same broad reach as GSM, and generally need to be in a fixed location.
